Merlot Veneto IGT - PLAVIS

Wine Plavis is our tribute to the river Piave (from the Latin Plavis) considered the "river sacred to the country", since it was a theatre of war during the Great War.

Obtained from Merlot grapes, among the most traditional varieties of the Piave area, it has a ripe red fruit bouquet and a smooth texture. Rich body and extreme longevity.

Veneto Wine

GRAPES: 100% Merlot.

HISTORICAL NOTES: "Plavis" is the Latin word of the Piave River, which flows entirely in the Veneto from the Dolomites mountains to Venice.

PRODUCTION AREA

It is produced in the Le Ronche estate, located in Fossalta di Piave. "Le Ronche" is the name of the place where this Tocai vineyard is located at about 10 km from the Adriatic Sea and at 50 km from the Dolomites Mountains.

SOIL: alluvial, made of “caranto”, a mix of white clay and minerals from the Dolomites Mountains.
CLIMATE: mild, with very few rain showers and high summer temperature with allows the grapes to ripen in the best conditions.
DENSITY OF THE PLANTATION AND TRAINING SYSTEM: 8.400 vines per hectare trained with guyot system.
YEAR OF THE PLANTATION: 1974-2009.

VINEYARD MANAGEMENT

To obtain a perfect ripening of the grapes, beyond the normal vineyard management, we carry out summer pruning and careful leaf thinning. Furthermore, the yield is kept very low in order to produce grapes rich in body and aroma.

HARVEST: end of September, picking up very ripe grapes, with a deep color, a complete aromatic structure and smooth tannins.

VINIFICATION

Destemming and crushing of the grapes, maceration and fermentation in special vessels at controlled temperature with frequent pumping over.

After this period the wine is taken out and ends its fermentation in stainless steel vats.

The wine matures for 8 months on its noble lees in oak barrique and for 12-18 months in bottle.

TASTING CHARACTERISTICS: intense ruby colour, ripe red fruit bouquet, full body, smooth, with the right level of tannins and pleasant wild fruit notes.

SERVING TEMPERATURE: 16-18°C.

FOOD MATCHING: it accompanies very well tasty first courses, boiled and white meat.

STORAGE: in a cool and dark place, keeping the bottle in a horizontal position. Its structure and complexity enable the wine to improve during maturation in the bottle, which can last up to 20 years, reaching the top after 10 years from the vintage.

ALCOHOL CONTENT: 12.5 % by vol.

Le Ronche Estate

The Le Ronche estate is located in Veneto, east of Treviso and north-east of Venice. The name Le Ronche represents an area of the village of Fossalta di Piave and comes from the local verb "roncare", which means to till and cultivate a field.

Le Ronche were pieces of land with woods that, for the particular quality and structure of the soil, were cultivated mainly with vines, thanks to the excellent quality features of the grapes produced.

It is in the Piave D.O.C. wines area. Piave is the name of an important river which goes through most of the eastern part of Veneto. During millennium it has left its sediments and originated this soil, particularly vocated to vine growing.

This estate is located at about 40 km from the mountains, at 10 km from the sea and at few hundred metres from the river Piave. This special location originates particular winds, wide changes of temperature from day to night and a microclimate ideal for obtaining wines with a high tasting profile. The soil is very rich in clay, which gives a perfect balance to the vines and produces complex and important wines. In the sixties the family selected the site where wines with a high personality and with a deep territorial identity could be produced and the traditional varieties of this area have been planted.

The cellar

ORGANIC AND BIODYNAMIC PRINCIPLES

In the vineyards we work under organic and biodynamic principles. We abolished the use of pesticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers and insecticides. We try to create an environment as friendly as possible for the proliferation of good insects, wild animals and microorganisms in the soil, in order to improve the life in the vineyard. We prepare our own natural fertilizing compost for enhancing soil life.

VEGAN PRINCIPLES

In our wines we do not use any animal derived product, maintaining its purity and naturalness at the highest. Treating and manipulating the grapes and the wine the less we can, guarantee genuineness, fragrance and identity.

GREEN ENERGY

On the roof of the production winery we have 418 solar panels that provide 100% of the electric power we need in the cellar. Green energy for a better environment around us.
