GRAPES: Traminer Aromatico

WINEMAKING:

Twelve hours low temperature skin contact at 10°C for the grapes from both vineyards.

The fruit is then soft-crushed, the must is clarified by settling at low temperature and fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures with regular stirring of the fine lees for about three months.

The wine matures in tanks before going into bottle.

VINEYARD:

Located in Aquileia (UD) in Friuli Venezia Giulia (Northern Italy) Traminer has traditionally been grown at Viola’s village for more than a century.

Its five hectares under vine were replanted in 2004 with clones from old vines on sandy soil, which means that even today, it is possible to grow the vines ungrafted, without a rootstock.

Two further hectares were planted in 1992, again on sandy soil, and the average yield per hectare is 60-65 quintals of grapes.

THE WINERY

Winery was established in Aquileia, a unique location rich in history and where the winemaking tradition dates back to 200 BC.

It is here that we tend to our native grape varieties with great respect for tradition.

Our aim is to enhance the native characteristics of our wines, making them recognizable as originating this particular region and their impeccable winemaking.

LAND

The vineyards cover several terroirs within the DOC Friuli Aquileia and DOC Friuli Colli Orientali areas.

Different terroirs indeed that share a unique culture, which is all about tradition and strong attachment to the land

This region in the north-east of Italy, squeezed between the Upper Adriatic and the Carnic and Julian Alps, presents an incredible variety of soils. Indeed, in the same plot of land you can have patches of yellow marls with alternate streaks of pebbles and dark clay with sand.

The Cellar

DOC FRIULI AQUILEIA

The DOC Friuli Aquileia area Is affected by a favourable microclimate and geographical position: the Julian Alps in the background defend the vines from the cold winds that blow from the North, while the Adriatic Sea bordering on side or the area mitigates the temperatures, which drop below zero for very brief periods of the year.

These very favourable pedoclimatic conditions have allowed these native varieties to flourish
The native varieties as well as those imported to the area that found the most suitable pedoclimatic conditions in the Colli Orientali area, have been cultivated since unmemorable times,  yielding wines of excellence in terms of quality.

THE WINES

We craft wines from grapes grown in our estate vineyards in the DOC Friuli Aquileia and DOC Friuli Colli Orientali areas.

We produce varieties that are typical of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

"Land that lies at the northern end of the Mediterranean Sea"

In the estate vineyards in the DOC Friuli Aquileia area we grow Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Müller Thurgau, Traminer Aromatico and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, which turn into pleasant, drinkable wines that reflect the terroir featuring a climate that is tempered by the closeness of the sea.

These lands of alluvial origin, and long since devoted to agriculture, feature soils with good pebble-gravel texture which are suitable for white grape vines, while the red grape cultivars naturally grow well on the hills where the soils are rich with clay.

Thanks to an exceptionally suitable microclimate, an ideal exposure of the vineyards, and not less important, careful and sensible farming techniques, we produce wines that are important and appealing.
